Hack Father’s Day the Right Way
It’s the same every year, it’s almost upon you and you panic buy nonsense that both you and your Dad know is going to end up in landfill.
Your Dad is delighted you’ve remembered, even more delighted that at least you’ve gone to some effort, yet deep inside there’s a twinge of… “This tat’s going in the bin the minute the dust starts gathering on it.” No matter how much of a brilliant child you’ve been, sometimes the last minute grasp for anything resembling an appropriate gift just doesn’t cut it.
The Ideal Father’s Day Gift
It’s what you dream of nailing; a little effort, a little thought that just makes Dad go – “Damn this kid’s good. What did I do to deserve such a brilliant son / daughter!” And let’s not forget the stepson or stepdaughter. When you deliver without prompt it’s amazing.
How is it done?
As a proud parent, I have to tell you the only thing I want from my daughter is experiences we will cherish forever. Sounds corny, yet it’s true, stuff we can do together. Opportunities that allow us to share and celebrate life, activities that involve more than sitting slumped side-by-side on the sofa, watching Netflix…
As a blogger and whisky lover I have to tell you I can think of nothing better than finding, or being introduced to a new dram. My father used to travel with work, being Scottish he would inevitably take whisky as a gift to the people he was meeting or doing business with. His memories of work (now in his 80’s) often stem from those shared experiences rather than the tradeshows, closing deals or discussing another city’s amazing architecture.
All I’d suggest is creating a situation where you get to do something together, just the two of you. I’m not the biggest fan of buying an experience (trip to the zoo, water park or activity centre), the best and most memorable moments are often a simple walk along a beach or Sunday afternoon drive.
To top it off you could always subscribe him to a year of the “Craft Whisky Club”, why? Because Dad’s Rock!
